Costa Rica: A Travel Diary

Costa Rica wasn’t a destination I had ever really considered visiting, but it ended up becoming my favorite place I’ve traveled to. The trip came together as a celebration of birthdays, anniversaries and graduations, making this year’s family vacation feel extra special. While I expected beautiful beaches, it turned into so much more. The people were some of the kindest we’ve met, the culture was welcoming and every day seemed to bring another incredible sunset. It’s easy to see why so many people fall in love with Costa Rica.

We stayed at Villa Potrero, a beautiful private home in Playa Potrero. Mornings began early with the sunrise, afternoons were spent exploring nearby beaches by golf cart and most days included spotting howler monkeys in the mango trees around the property. We were regularly greeted by Paco, the property dog, who always seemed to be lounging around and quickly became part of the experience. The villa offered private beach access, making it easy to slip away for a sunset walk or head out in search of a local food experience. It gave the family plenty of room to gather while still having space to relax and unwind in our own way. Between the location, the views and the overall experience, it was the perfect place to call home for the week. We already miss it, Paco and the incredible staff.

Where I Stayed: Villa Potrero

Food & Beverage:

One of the best parts of Costa Rica was the food. Whether we were grabbing coffee before a day of exploring, enjoying authentic Costa Rican cuisine at a local restaurant or gathering around the table at the villa for one of Chef Kattya’s meals, it was all equally delicious.

Puro

Our favorite spot of the trip. We found ourselves returning more than once for coffee, breakfast, lunch and friendly conversation. The food was excellent, the coffee was even better and the people made us feel right at home. We already miss our friends there.

Nita Coffee

A charming local coffee shop with great pastries, delicious coffee and the cutest dog. It was the perfect place to ease into the morning before heading off to explore.

Hemingway’s

This was one of the first places we visited after arriving in Costa Rica and it set the tone for the rest of the trip. We loved the live music, incredible sunset and a relaxed evening by the water. It was also a great place to escape the heat for a bit and settle into vacation mode. I ordered the pizza and the guacamole that quickly became a favorite of the table. Between the views, the atmosphere and the food, it was a great introduction to Costa Rica.

Hazel’s

Our choice for getting dressed up and enjoying a night out together. The atmosphere felt special without being overly formal, making it a great spot to celebrate and enjoy a relaxed evening as a group.

Private Chef Experience

One of the highlights of the entire week. Chef Kattya prepared incredible breakfasts and an authentic Costa Rican dinner at the villa. Everything was fresh, flavorful and beautifully presented.

Costa Rica Highlights

We explored Playa Flamingo and Playa Conchal, sailed along the coast on a sunset catamaran cruise and spent a day in the rainforest spotting sloths, toucans, butterflies and other wildlife. There were morning coffee runs, days spent by the water and some of the prettiest sunsets we’ve ever seen. We watched howler monkeys from the villa, learned about coffee and chocolate production, rode horses on the beach and embraced the slower pace of life that Costa Rica does so well. It wasn’t overplanned or rushed. Just a week spent celebrating, exploring and enjoying time together in one of the most beautiful places we’ve visited.
