Exploring Santa Fe: A High Desert Escape

Santa Fe had been on my travel list for a minute and it didn’t disappoint. From adobe-lined streets to a thriving arts scene, this high desert escape is packed with history, charm and adventure. Whether you’re there for the food, the culture or just a little fresh air, Santa Fe delivers in the best way.

The second I arrived, I felt like I had stepped into Radiator Springs from Cars—the warm adobe buildings, the scent of piñon wood in the air, the creative energy that buzzes through the city. It’s a place that invites you to slow down and take it in.

We spent five days exploring and the city’s sense of expression was everywhere. Every street, shop and restaurant had its own personality and even our stay introduced us to people from all over—musicians, artists and travelers who seemed just as inspired by Santa Fe as we were.

Santa Fe has the smallest airport I’ve ever seen and I loved it. No long, chaotic terminals, just a smooth arrival that set the perfect tone. Our plans shifted, as travel tends to do and my friend didn’t make it in the first night. I picked them up the next morning and we kicked off the trip with a rental from Turo. Was it cheaper? I’m not sure. But it gave us the freedom to explore on our own time, which is what really mattered.

Where We Stayed: El Rey Court

This place is the definition of cool. A retro motel turned desert retreat, El Rey Court is cozy, creative and just the right kind of laid-back. The Turquoise Trailer, the La Reina bar (with live music most nights), the sauna, the courtyard—it is exactly the kind of place you could spend an entire day in and not get bored.

Food and Beverage:

Santa Fe’s food scene–If you’re heading there, these are the places to put on your list:

  • Tomasita’s Santa Fe Station – A classic New Mexican spot. The trio of queso, guacamole and salsa was an instant yes.
  • La Mama Cafe – Great lattes, fluffy pancakes and a charming little market area.
  • Dolina Cafe & Bakery – If you go anywhere, go here. The coffee, food and atmosphere were all perfect.
  • Modern General Feed & Seed – A bright, airy café that’s great for a meal or a work session.

New Mexico Highlights

Santa Fe has something for everyone. You can ski in the morning, hike the desert in the afternoon and soak in a hot spring by night. Meow Wolf was a wild, immersive experience—definitely a must-see. Whether you’re looking to create, explore or just escape for a bit, Santa Fe is the kind of place that stays with you.

“If you ever go to New Mexico, it will itch you for the rest of your life.” Georgia O’Keeffe
